I had the distinct pleasure of being invited to attend the Spring Sorcery Social Event as a Community Artist! This was the first show I have ever been to for my own art, and it was very exciting.
The event itself was held at the Kimpton Hotel Monaco, which is the former B&O Railroad headquarters building. It is a gorgeous piece of architecture with marble staircases, old school brass, and a ton of beautiful detail.
This was a good shakedown event for me to get ready for IX later this year. I was able to set up my booth, figure out what things I actually needed with me and I got to get a rep of actually setting up and being able to be flexible for what the venue has for me to use. I also got to talk with some other upstarts about going to shows and getting some great info.
Not to mention that I was in the presence of greatness. Artists Drew Tucker, Jeff Menges, Allan Pollack, Mattias Frisk and Truitt Parish were all in attendance and had booths. Mike from Collector’s Arthouse was also there and had a booth set up. Also Eriks Curiosa Reps Chase and Simon were there and making their rounds.
Overall I got to speak with many of them in depth including making fast friends with Truitt and Mattias, getting impromptu art reviews from Alan, Chase and Simon. We even all went out to dinner with Mike and got to hear all kinds of stories about the good old days at Magic.
Another task I was given at the show was to teach two sessions of “how to make a card alter”. The sessions had some impressive AV equipment set up for me, and I got to paint in person and answer questions for prospective painters. The classes were a little small, but the intimate setting was enjoyable, and I sent a lucky participant from each class home with the alter I was working on.
This was an enjoyable show for me, and I cant wait to do another one of these!
